Orton-Gillingham Multisensory Approach
to Literacy
(ages 5 -adult)
The Orton-Gillingham Multisensory Approach is an explicit, systematic method for teaching handwriting, spelling, and reading. Components of lessons typically include:
Phonogram and blending drills and review
Reading words and sentences pertaining to the newly introduced concept
Writing the new concept, as well as previous concepts
Reading decodable texts
Phonemic awareness
Handwriting
Fluency
Learning Red Words (commonly known as sight words)
A minimum commitment of two - 60 minute sessions a week is required in order to receive the most benefit from the individualized Orton-Gillingham lessons due to the structured, cumulative nature of the Orton-Gillingham method. Executive Skills (ages 12 - adult)
Executive functioning is the cognitive processes that help a person complete daily activities. Task initiation and focus, planning and prioritizing, utilizing working memory, and emotional control are examples of executive skills. One or two - 45 minute sessions per week is recommended. Cursive Writing (ages 7 - adult)
There are many benefits for learning the life skill of writing in cursive. The fluid connectedness of cursive writing is very distinctive and is not laborious or disjointed like printing. Cursive writing also leads to strengthened hand-eye coordination, improved language fluency, and increased brain cognition.
